Common liposuction myths from Dr. SayahIf you are considering liposuction, it’s important that you know all the facts. There are a number of myths about liposuction circulating, and they often lead to a misunderstanding of what the procedure actually accomplishes. In this blog post, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Sayah sets the record straight on some of the most common myths about the procedure.
MYTH #1: LIPOSUCTION IS FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Many people believe that liposuction is meant for people who are overweight or simply for people who want to lose a large amount of weight. This is not true. Liposuction is not weight loss surgery. Rather, it’s a body contouring procedure that removes small fatty deposits around the body. The procedure is meant to improve the contours of the body, for a more balanced and beautiful appearance. Ideal candidates for liposuction should be within 30 percent of a healthy weight. People who want to reduce body mass are advised to do so through diet and exercise or bariatric (weight loss) surgery instead of, or before, having liposuction.
MYTH#2: LIPOSUCTION IS DANGEROUS
Thanks to the latest advances in liposuction technology and surgical techniques, modern liposuction surgery is safe and can deliver beautiful, long-lasting results. However, just like with any surgery, liposuction comes with possible risks and complications. Before surgery, Dr. Sayah meets with all his patients and discusses these risks in detail.
MYTH #3: LIPOSUCTION REMOVES CELLULITE
Unfortunately, liposuction doesn’t treat cellulite. Cellulite is a cellular breakdown that causes damage to the skin’s connective tissue. Because cellulite is not fat, it cannot be treated by liposuction. In some case, liposuction can improve the appearance of cellulite, but only slightly.
MYTH #4: LIPOSUCTION GETS RID OF FAT FOR GOOD
While liposuction does permanently remove fat cells, future weight gain is still possible. Weight gained after liposuction will result in a more even distribution weight on the body. Dr. Sayah recommends his patients pair a healthy diet with regular exercise to maintain their slimmer physique following liposuction.
MYTH #5: LIPOSUCTION IS ONLY FOR WOMEN
While women still outnumber men when it comes to having liposuction, an increasing number of men are seeking the procedure. In 2014, 24,000 men underwent the procedure, a 3 percent increase from 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Men often seek the treatment to tone the stomach, thighs, love handles and chest.
